In order to make the world around us a little more manageable and predictable, we tend to recognise patterns in the things and customs we encounter.

Just as humour involves a story taking an unexpected twist, so a dislocation in a familiar pattern can add an interesting element of surprise.

In images, items that don't fit into a pattern we recognise can attract our attention and add interest.
