Discussion :
  • The outcomes from security breaches of a couple of members' Yahoo email accounts were examined.
Presentation :
  • The award-winning entries from the 2015 ASCCA Digital Photography Competition were shown.
Q & A :
  • Q - How can I rotate multiple photos taken on a smartphone through 90° simultaneously?

    A - After transferring the photos to a PC:

    1. Open Windows/File Explorer.
    2. Navigate to the folder containing the photos to be rotated.
    3. Select the photos to be rotated.
    4. Right-click on one of the selected photos.
    5. Left-click on Rotate clockwise or counterclockwise to complete the task.
    6. Close Windows/File Explorer.
Activity :
  • In preparation for the Seniors Week 2016 Digital Photography Exhibition, the subject for photos at our meeting on 2 February 2016 will be "Transport".

News :
  • There will be no display of DIG members' photos at this year's November Christmas party meeting.
  • "Sculpture by the Sea" has been extended by a day to end on Monday 9 November 2015.
  • Members who took photos at the Grandparents Day event at Penshurst Long Day Care Centre on Wednesday 21 October 2015 will each receive $20 to cover their expenses.
  • A reminder that a dementia and carers day event will be held at 91 Queens Rd Hurstville on Monday 16 November 2015.
Q & A :
  • Q - How can I manage travel photos taken on a camera and a smartphone when the date and time on the camera had not been adjusted to the local time?

    A - The following two-stage process could be used to put the photos into a single folder in the correct chronological order:
    1. Use Picasa to change the date and time for the photos taken on the device that was not set for the local time. (Tools > Adjust Date and Time …).
    2. Use Photoscape to bulk rename the photos in the camera (and phone, if necessary) to include the date and time in front of each original photo name.
    When all the photos are moved into a single folder, they should then be sorted in chronological order.

  • "Sculpture by the Sea" will be on display again this year, along the walk between Bondi and Tamarama beaches, from 22 October 2015 to 8 November 2015.
  • ASCCA 2015 Digital Photography Competition results will be announced at the ASCCA AGM on Tuesday 17 November 2015.
  • A "Digital Camera Basics" course will be held on Wednesdays 7, 14 and 21 October 2015.
Presentations :
  • Geoff Turton demonstrated how he used Inkscape, a free vector graphics program, to prepare the HSCC 2015/16 Committee display.
  • Ken McRae demonstrated the use of a bluetooth remote control shutter release unit for better control when capturing photos with a mobile phone camera.
Activity :
  • "Birds" will be the subject for photos at our November meeting.

  • 9 members presented their photos featuring "Paper".

  • Geoff Turton demonstrated Microsoft's Image Composite Editor (ICE) program for stitching groups of photos together to create panoramas.
  • Geoff also highlighted the range of image editing features in the free program Paint.NET. These include a useful set of selection and layer options.
Activity :
  • The subject for photos at our October meeting will be "Paper".
Members' Photos :
  • 13 members contributed photos on the topic "E is for …" for presentation this month.

  • A reminder that entries for the ASCCA 2015 Digital Photography Competition must be handed to Marilyn Richardson by 14 August 2015.
Q & A :
  • Q - When a video captured in portrait orientation on a smart phone is transferred to a PC, it is displayed in landscape orientation.
    Can it be rotated through 90° on the computer?

    A - How to rotate a video through 90° is clearly described in a Youtube video entitled "Rotate & Save a Video using VLC Media Player".

  • Geoff Turton described how to add a rainbow to an image using GIMP.
Activity :
  • Photos for our August meeting will feature "Flags".

  • "All Eyes on Hurstville" DVDs have now been delivered.
  • Marilyn Richardson must receive entries for ASCCA's 2015 Digital Photography Competition by 14 August 2015, for lodging with ASCCA by Monday 31 August.
Presentations :
  • Geoff Turton demonstrated how to perform a reverse image search with Google Chrome browser.
    1. Visit images.google.com.
    2. On your computer, click on the image you want to search for.
    3. Drag the image into the search box.
    When you search using an image, your search results may include:
    • Similar images,
    • Sites that include the image,
    • Other sizes of the image you searched for.
  • A collection of stairs images made interesting viewing.
  • Geoff Turton demonstrated using Duplicate Cleaner Free to find duplicate image files in your computer.
Activity :
  • The subject for photos at our July meeting will be "Rainbow".
Members' Photos :
  • A variety of photos featuring "Doors" were contributed by 15 members.

  • Geoff Turton described the process he uses to prepare members' photos for the Club's website. This includes using the excellent Bulk Rename Utility available at www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/.
  • Options for sorting photos in Windows Explorer were demonstrated, including by Name, Date Modified and Date Taken.

  • "Doors" will be the subject for photos at our June meeting.

  • Hurstville City Council's 2015 Seniors Week Digital Photography Exhibition, featuring DIG members' "Multicultural" photos, was launched at Mortdale RSL on Monday 16 March 2015.
  • A DVD entitled "All Eyes on Hurstville", featuring DIG members' photos from the 2012 Seniors Week Digital Photography Exhibition, with words written and spoken by members of Hurstville Discovery Writers Group, was launched at the same event.
  • "That's Not A Polar Bear", the book of DIG members' animal photos with observations and comments by pre-school children, was launched at Jack High Child Care Centre on 31 March 2015.
  • Entry forms and conditions for the ASCCA 2015 Digital Photography Competition are now available at www.ascca.org.au.
Discussion :
  • "Transport" was selected as the subject for Hurstville City Council's 2016 Seniors Week Digital Photography Exhibition.
  • Copyright issues relating to photos uploaded to the Internet were discussed, with reference to the paper "Photographers & Copyright" available at www.copyright.org.au.
Activity :
  • Our May meeting will feature photos of "Cars".

  • 12 members accepted the challenge to show their photos of "Eyes".

  • Hurstville City Council's Seniors Week Digital Photography Exhibition, featuring HSCC members' "Multicultural" photos, will be launched at Mortdale RSL on Monday 16 March 2015 at 10:00am.
  • The book, "That's Not A Polar Bear", featuring DIG members' animal photos will be launched at Jack High Child Care Centre on Tuesday 31 March 2015 at 9:30am.
Presentation :
  • Margaret Barnett and Marilyn Richardson described how to download, install and use software from "www.photobooksRus.com.au" to create and order high quality printed albums featuring your own photos.

  • Hurstville City Council compiled DIG members' animal photos from the 2014 Seniors Week Digital Photography exhibition into a book for local child care centres. Children's comments and observations on the photos have been collected and will be incorporated, with the animal photos, into a new book entitled "That's Not A Polar Bear". Members who contributed photos will receive a copy of the new book.

  • Contents of the new short course on "Digital Image Editing with Picasa" were outlined.
Activity :
  • The topic for photos to be presented at our March meeting is "Balls".
