Presentation :
  • The award-winning entries from the 2013 ASCCA Digital Photography Competition were shown.
  • The website maps.six.nsw.gov.au was viewed. At this website, you enter a NSW street address to display an aerial view of that address (like Google maps). However, an additional feature is the availability of a slider that allows you to transition from the present-day view to an equivalent aerial view taken 70 years ago, in 1943.
Activity :
  • "Blue" is the subject for photos at our next meeting on 4 February 2014.

News :
  • Because of the smaller number of HSCC entries in the 2013 ASCCA Digital Photography Competition than in previous years, all the ASCCA competition entries will be combined into a single group for the Members' Choice Award at the November members' meeting.
  • A second group, consisting of photos presented by members at monthly DIG meetings during 2013, will be displayed for members to vote for "Best Photo of the Year".
Activity : The subject for photos to be presented at the December DIG meeting will be "Architecture".
Photographs : 8 members contributed photos on the subject "Face".

News : "Sculpture by the Sea", Bondi, is back again for a 17th year! The outdoor sculpture exhibition returns to the Bondi to Tamarama coast walk from 24 October - 10 November 2013.
Presentations : Presentation and discussion of the challenges and effects of changing colours when using natural lighting for photography. See www.cambridgeincolour.com for more tutorials.
Activity : The subject for our November meeting is "Face".

  • Geoff Turton demonstrated the free computer program QuickStego, which can be used to conceal text in a digital image - steganography.
  • Members discussed issues of Photographers' Rights raised in a page on the St George Leagues Club Photographic Society's website.

  • An exhibition "Ansell Adams - Photography from the Mountains to the Sea" is on at the Maritime Museum from 4 July - 8 December 2013.
    See the Exhibition website for details.
  • "Sculpture by the Sea" will be on again from 24 October - 10 November 2013, along the sea walk between Bondi and Tamarama beaches.
Presentations :
  • Many members have multiple copies of digital photos taking up space on their computers.

    Geoff Turton demonstrated three freeware programs that can find multiple copies of files.

    • Search My Files and Duplicate Cleaner both offer options to search for various file types and to select search locations.
    • Everything is a simple, yet impressive program that searches for files and folders on your computer. It is significantly faster that the search tools that come with Windows. However, it is not specifically designed to search for duplicate files.
Activity :
  • Photos featuring "Green" will be presented at our August meeting.

  • Ian Chesterfield receives life membership Ian Chesterfield has advised that, as a result of changed commitments and responsibilities, he is no longer able to devote time to HSCC activities.

    Ian joined the Club as a tutor in 2004 and soon after, offered to lead the newly-formed Digital Photography Interest Group. When the Club newsletter editor role became vacant, Ian volunteered to do that job as well.

    To recognise the valuable contribution that he has made to our Club, the Committee awarded Ian life membership and Pamela presented the award at our June DIG meeting.

    Ian leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes.
     
  • Entries for the ASCCA 2013 Digital Photography and Photo Story Competitions must be submitted by the DIG meeting on 6 August 2013.

  • A recent MakeUseOf.com article listed 10 Inspiring Ideas for Photography.
  • Managing lots of digital photos can be a challenge. Two websites offering their choice of Best Free Digital Photo Organisers are:
  • Phototheca is also a good free program for sorting, filtering and viewing your digital photos.
  • Barry Porter described how he uses the comprehensive set of tools in Windows Live Photo Gallery to edit his digital photos.

  • "Light and Shade" is the theme for photos at our June meeting.

  • The book "All Eyes on Hurstville", produced by Hurstville City Council and featuring photos by HSCC members and text by members of the Hurstville Discovery Writers Group, was launched at the Posh Nosh Cafe, Hurstville, on Friday 22 March 2013. Members whose photos appear in the book will receive a free copy.
Presentations :
  • Geoff Turton demonstrated a free online tool available at www.webinpaint.com that can be used to remove unwanted spots and small objects from digital images. The best results are achieved when the item to be removed is surrounded by a uniform background.
  • Geoff also demonstrated a free bulk renaming program available at www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk. A comprehensive user manual is also available. This versatile program is excellent for renaming batches of images from digital cameras.

  • "Mirror" is the subject for photos at our May meeting.

  • Mary Daly explained how she used Windows Movie Maker and Windows DVD Maker to create a DVD slideshow capable of being viewed on her computer on TV, via a DVD player.
  • Geoff Turton highlighted some of the excellent digital photography guides and tips available at www.exposureguide.com .
  • www.snapseed.com has recently released an excellent digital image editing app for tablets. Snapseed is available from the App Store for iPads and Google Play for Android tablets.
Activity :
  • "C is for …" is the topic for photos to be presented at our April meeting.
Members' Photos :
  • 12 members contributed an interesting selection of "Summer" photos.

News :
  • Members' photos of "Active Seniors" from this meeting were selected for display in the Digital Photography Exhibition to be conducted in the Hurstville City Library during Seniors Week 2013.
  • The Exhibition wil be officially opened by the Mayor of Hurstville, Cr Jack Jacovou, on Monday 11 March 2013 at 4:15pm.
  • Brenda Eggleton gave us a draft copy of the book "All Eyes on Hurstville" which features photos DIG members entered in Hurstville City Council's Digital Photography Exhibition in March 2012. The book will be launched on 22 March 2013.
