  • Robin Ireland presented a slideshow of photos from her recent travels.
  • Joyce Pickup demonstrated some printing options available in Paint Shop Pro.
  • HSCC QR Code Geoff Turton demonstrated how smart phones and tablet computers can interpret QR Code images.

    This QR code image contains street and postal address, phone number and website details for Hurstville Seniors Computer Club.

Presentation :
  • Geoff Turton discussed resizing photos -
    • When attaching one or more photos to an email, most email client programs (eg: Outlook Express or Windows Live Mail) present options for resizing the photos for you.
    • Depending on a camera's image size setting, a modern digital camera can save images with more than 12 million pixels (4000 x 3000 pixels) and, depending on the amount of detail in a photo, such image files can be several megabytes in size.
    • Resizing photos to 1024 x 768 pixels with a file size of 200 kilobytes or less is a useful guideline for preparing digital images as email attachments.

  • HSCC entries in the 2012 ASCCA Digital Photography Competition were displayed.
  • Geoff Turton highlighted the vast amount of free software that is reviewed and rated at Gizmo's Tech Support Alert.
  • This site rated the program SearchMyFiles as a good option for finding duplicate copies of photos (and other files) on your computer. SearchMyFiles is a portable application that can be run from a flash drive.
Activity :
  • Photos for display at our October meeting will feature "Water".

Presentation :
  • A YouTube video outlining how the GPS data that can be stored in image files captured with modern cameras and smart phones was shown. This data can be extracted from such photos that have been uploaded to social media sites and potentially misused.
  • Many digital image viewers (including Picasa, Irfanview, Faststone and Photoscape) display much of the EXIF (Exchangeable Image File) data, including GPS data, that is stored in digital image files.
  • The program JPEGsnoop displays all the EXIF data stored with an image.
Activity :
  • The subject for photos at our September meeting is "Table and Chairs"

  • 14 members presented photos on the topic "Still Life".

  • Using Flickr and Creating a Travel Blog were suggested as potential topics for future meetings.
  • 500px was recommended as another website for viewing quality photographs.

  • Members' photos of Hurstville Buildings from this meeting were selected for display in the Seniors Digital Photographic Exhibition to be held in the Hurstville City Library during Seniors Week in March 2012.
  • The Exhibition wil be officially opened by the Mayor of Hurstville, Clr Steve McMahon, on Tuesday 13 March 2012 at 1:00pm.
Activity :
  • The topic for photos to be presented at our March meeting is "Skywatch".
