  1. How can you apply a date and time stamp in an Excel worksheet?
    • The function =NOW() inserts Date and Time in a cell, but this will change whenever a worksheet is recalculated. To convert the NOW() function to a value:
      • Select the cell containing the NOW() function.
      • Place the cursor on the right edge black border so that it turns from a white plus sign to four black arrows.
      • While holding down the right mouse button, drag the cell to the next column and back to the original column.
      • Let go the right mouse button.
      • From the context menu that appears, select
        Copy Here as Values Only.

Excel on the Internet :
  • Microsoft offers a comprehensive collection of Excel video tutorials. Although the videos are based on Excel 2010, most of the tutorials are relevant for earlier versions of Excel.

  1. How do you apply Conditional Formatting based on a comparison with the value in a reference cell?
    (eg: highlight when two totals are not equal)
    • Select cell(s) to be formatted.
    • Open Conditional Formatting dialog box.
    • Select required rule.
    • Click Collapse Dialog button Collapse Dialog button, then click in the reference cell.
      By using the Collapse Dialog button, Excel automatically inserts the necessary "=" sign.
    • Click Expand Dialog button Expand Dialog button to restore Conditional Formatting dialog box.
    • Select required format.
    • Click OK.
  2. How can you stop headings at the top of a worksheet from disappearing when you scroll down the sheet?
    • Select the row below the last row you want to freeze at the top of the worksheet.
      • Excel 2003 - Windows menu > Freeze Panes.
      • Excel 2007 - View tab > Window group > Freeze Panes.
    Note: It is also possible to freeze columns on the left of a worksheet, to stop them disappearing when you scroll to the right.
Members' Projects :
  • Barry Beggs demonstrated a comprehensive workbook he has developed to process financial records for an organisation. This workbook included protection for cells containing formulas so that multiple users can add input without risking the workbook's integrity.
  • Alan Cuthbertson demonstrated his use of Excel to maintain extensive family medical records.

  1. Why use a PDF writer to print an Excel worksheet?
    • The use of PDFill Writer, a typical and effective free PDF writer application, to create and distribute secure and universally readable versions of an Excel worksheet was discussed and demonstrated.

  • Les Gersback described his use of Excel to record and process the results of his Bowling Club's nine teams during ten rounds of competition bowls.

  1. Where is the Data Entry Form in Excel 2007?
    • Excel 2003 - The data entry form is accessed from the Menu bar at Data > Form...
    • Excel 2007 - The data entry form cannot be accessed from any of the Ribbon tabs. Instead, the Quick Access Toolbar at the top-left of the Excel window can be customised to include the Form... command.
  2. What Conditional Formatting options are available, based on the text in a cell?
    • Excel 2003 - A maximum of only three different conditional formatting rules can be applied.
    • Excel 2007 - The number of conditional formatting rules is only limited by the amount of available computer memory and a greater variety of formatting options can be applied.
Members' Projects :
  • Graeme Gavin demonstrated a versatile Excel workbook used to maintain financial records for a Probus Club.
  • An Excel worksheet in which you can play a game of mini-golf was shown.
    It turns out that it is a blank Excel worksheet with a ShockWave Flash (.swf) mini-golf program embedded in it. ShockWave Flash is a Flash animation technology.

XLIG : This Excel Interest Group (XLIG) is a group of HSCC members who:
  • Already use Excel,
  • Want to learn more about Excel and
  • Are prepared to share their knowledge and experiences of working with Excel.
Survey : Of the 10 members present,
  • 5 use Excel 2003 and
  • 5 use Excel 2007.
Excel on the Internet :
  • Microsoft has an excellent interactive guide to translate Excel 2003 menu options to the Excel 2007 Ribbon.
  • There is also a downloadable version that can be installed on a computer for use off-line.
Presentation :
  • Geoff Turton demonstrated Learn Excel, a net-based system of notes and exercises for learning how to create Excel worksheets.
